"Why is it important to hire a professional makeup and hair artist?"

I feel like this is a question that I don't encounter very often as an established artist, but every once in a while, it probably does cross a potential client's mind. So while I'm not met with this particular question these days, one of the questions I do still occasionally encounter is, "Oh, I don't wear much makeup. Will this be too drastic of a difference from my normal look?"

This question can be a little tricky to answer. Regardless of the event, my main focus is always creating an effortlessly flawless look that meets and exceeds my client's goals. The approach for meeting these goals may change slightly based on the specific occasion. For example, when working with photographers, my application technique is somewhat based on the individual photographer's style and the type of session for which my client is booking me.

What does this mean for you, the client? This means that the look I create for you and the products that I use are completely customized based on lighting, mood, setting, and editing style of your photographer. Some photographers prefer a more natural touch, while others like heavily application. There is no right or wrong, rather, just whichever fits best with your personal style.

Another important thing to note is that the style of your session can be determined by the type of session that you book. If you book a model call session, for example, then the look will be pre-determined by the photographer's specific branding as the session has been offered at a very discounted rate for marketing purposes. In contrast, regular sessions allow clients full creative freedoms, which allow me as your artist to fully customize your makeup and hair based on your wishes, with your Photographer's particular style in mind.

For my special event clients, (I'm talking about you, my Brides and military ball ladies), my approach is always based upon how to best reach your specific wants and needs while ensuring your comfort. My personal thoughts are that skin should always look like skin, but I have some clients who love their makeup the way I love my eyeliner, thick and heavy. For those clients, I can definitely accommodate their requests for fuller coverage. Again, it is all about whatever makes you feel your best!

A few of the reasons to hire a professional makeup artist can vary from situation to situation, but overall, a professional artist understands how to determine which situations call for what style of makeup application. We spend years educating ourselves on what products are best suited for various skin types, situations, and how to best apply these products. We invest thousands upon thousands of dollars annually into our professional kits to ensure that you receive only the highest quality skincare and makeup and that quality is reflected in our work. Some of my personal kit staples are Koh Gen Do Aqua and Moisture Foundations, Temptu Pro Foundations (link to consumer line), Face Stockholm Color Correctors, and so much more... which, will be a series of several future blog posts! We are sometimes responsible for managing strict timelines. Beyond this, we also learn how to best handle interpersonal conflict situations because sometimes, we are part of helping dissipate stressful situations.

Some of us choose to invest in an education and learn from some of the industry's most highly-respected artists, like my personal mentor, Kerry Herta of Colour Box Makeup Studios. From these artists, we learn techniques that are used on some of Hollywood's finest, techniques and knowledge that we apply to every job. In addition to this, we independently dedicate countless hours to researching new techniques, products, styles, and trends to ensure that we keep things fresh for our clients.

So, why do you need a professional hair and makeup artist for an upcoming event or photo session? The makeup that many of us wear on a daily basis usually isn't optimal for a special event or professional photography session. Trying to create professional results without the specific skill set and products to do so can be incredibly stressful and disheartening.

Lastly, for a lot of us, we do not take the time to stop and pamper ourselves. Hiring a professional hair and makeup artist allows you a little time to relax, be pampered, and feel confident knowing that your trusted professional has the experience and knowledge necessary to make all of your dreams come true.
